Global markets finished the week on a cautious note with technology shares leading declines.

It is a day for community-led culture in Lapa, then a relaxed evening as the city cools.

What to See & Do
SATURDAY IN RIO

TODAY’S PICK — COMMUNITY CULTURE

Sustainable Favela Festival takes over Fundição Progresso

Head to Lapa for the 3rd Sustainable Favela Festival, running 9 am to 5 pm at Fundição Progresso on Rua dos Arcos. The event is free but requires registration.

Organisers list 180 activities, with 167 community groups representing 150 favelas and peripheral neighbourhoods. Expect talks, workshops, music and food focused on territorial solutions.

The venue is a short walk from the Carioca metro station. From Ipanema or Copacabana, take Line 1 towards Uruguai and change at Cinelândia if needed.

Registration is required, so check online before you go. If you cannot register, you can still enjoy Lapa’s Saturday street atmosphere around the venue.

This is a working event with depth — set aside at least two hours to explore. Local food stalls will keep prices reasonable.

OUTDOORS — GARDENS AND VIEWS

Jardim Botânico and Parque Lage before the rain

Start at Jardim Botânico in the neighbourhood of the same name, open from 8 am.

The imperial palms and orchid house are the highlights. From there, walk ten minutes to Parque Lage, which is free and open from 8 am to 5 pm.

Both sit at the foot of the Tijuca forest. Cloud cover should keep the morning walk comfortable.

COFFEE & WHERE TO WORK — CENTRO AND BOTAFOGO

Weekend laptop spots

Many Centro cafés close on Saturday, but Botafogo has options. Try Curto Café on Rua Voluntários da Pátria, which stays open on weekends and has strong wifi.

If the festival sparks ideas, head to a nearby Lapa snack bar for a coffee and sketch notes rather than expecting reliable Saturday wifi.

THE CONTRASTING PLAY — QUIET ART

Museu Nacional de Belas Artes and Paço Imperial

For air-conditioned calm, walk to Museu Nacional de Belas Artes in Centro. Entry is free; check opening hours before you go.

Then cross to Paço Imperial on Praça XV, open from noon to 6 pm and also free. Both suit a slower, more contemplative afternoon.

This pairs well with lunch in Centro rather than the festival crowd. The two museums sit ten minutes apart on foot.

TONIGHT, AFTER 7 PM

Lapa samba and a Copacabana nightcap

Stay in Lapa after the festival. The area fills with samba circles and bars around Rua da Lapa and Avenida Mem de Sá.

For a more polished evening, head to Beco das Garrafas in Copacabana. The historic alley hosts live Brazilian music in small clubs.

Check door prices before committing — most Lapa bars are free entry, while Copacabana clubs often charge a cover.

If you want a quieter close, walk to a kiosk on Copacabana beach for a cold drink. The forecast keeps rain offshore until later.

ALSO ON TODAY

Sustainable Favela Festival — Fundição Progresso, Lapa — 9 am to 5 pm, free with registration. 180 activities from 150 favelas.

Museu do Amanhã — Praça Mauá, Centro — 10 am to 6 pm. Futuristic science and sustainability exhibits.

Museu de Arte do Rio (MAR) — Praça Mauá, Centro — 11 am to 6 pm, R$20 (about US$4); free on Tuesdays.

CCBB exhibitions — Rua Primeiro de Março, Centro — 9 am to 8 pm, free. A reliable Saturday art stop.

04
Getting Around
TRANSPORT

Metrô Lines 1, 2 and 4 run normally on Saturday. A Giro card avoids queueing.

If rain arrives, ride-hailing surcharges will rise quickly in Lapa and Centro. The VLT light rail is a good alternative for moving between Centro and Praça Mauá.

The seafront ciclovia along Copacabana and Ipanema stays open, but the cycle path closes by 7 pm as daylight fades.

05
Where to Eat
LUNCH & DINNER

Lunch: Near the festival, try a pay-by-weight spot on Rua do Lavradio or a prato feito in a Lapa boteco for roughly R$30 to R$45 (about US$6 to US$9). For a sit-down meal, Bar Brasil in Lapa serves hearty Minas Gerais food.

Dinner: In Centro, Confeitaria Colombo on Rua Gonçalves Dias offers an old-world dinner for roughly R$70 to R$120 (about US$14 to US$24) per person. For a more local Saturday night, eat at CT Boucherie, where a main course runs roughly R$90 to R$150 (about US$18 to US$30).

06
Practical Info
GOOD TO KNOW

Carry cash or a Pix-enabled card; many small festival stalls only take Pix. An umbrella and a light jacket serve you in the afternoon and evening.

Book a table for dinner if you plan to eat after 8 pm on Saturday. Lapa bars fill quickly from 6 pm.

Keep phones out of sight on crowded streets around Lapa at night. Use ride-hailing apps from well-lit corners rather than walking long distances after midnight.

07
Community & Lifestyle
FOR NEWCOMERS

The Sustainable Favela Festival is the best community bridge today. Introduce yourself at the registration desk and ask which workshop favela residents recommend.

For digital nomads, WhatsApp expat groups are the best place to find weekend co-working meetups.

08
Game Day
THE WEEKEND ROUND

We have not confirmed a major Rio derby for today. The week’s big football story is the Copa Libertadores semi-final.

Fluminense, trailing Palmeiras 2-1 after the first leg at the Maracanã, play the return in São Paulo on Wednesday, 21 October. Flamengo host Estudiantes at the Maracanã on Thursday, 22 October, after a 0-0 draw in La Plata.

09
Business & Markets
WEEK IN FIGURES

Global stocks slipped on Friday as technology shares fell: the S&P 500 lost 1.09% and the Nasdaq 2.1%.

Brazil’s main stock index, the Ibovespa, bucked the trend and rose 0.54% to 205,430. The real strengthened 0.63% to 5.0648 per US dollar (RT close, 16 October).

The US dollar index fell 0.27% and the 10-year Treasury yield stayed near 5.1%. Brazilian markets are closed over the weekend, so the next local price action comes on Monday.
