San Francisco residents got an unexpected fireworks extravaganza Saturday night when hundreds of illegal explosives erupted on Ocean Beach.
The massive, unsanctioned pyrotechnic display erupted around 10:30 p.m., sending a seemingly endless stream of colorful explosions into the night sky as multiple fireworks ignited simultaneously, according to KRON4.
Wild footage posted to Instagram captured the explosive spectacle, with fireworks launching in rapid succession and bursting overhead for roughly two minutes straight.
The relentless barrage appeared to catch nearby beachgoers off guard, with onlookers standing in apparent disbelief as the fireworks continued to explode.
And while some San Franciscans were impressed by the rogue show, others weren’t exactly celebrating.
Social media quickly lit up with reactions from residents who said the booming blasts could be heard blocks away.
“This was an epic amount of fireworks. Could see them from my house. Impressive,” one Instagram user marveled.
Another resident said the unexpected explosions left their four-legged companion traumatized.
“Heard this last night from 20 blocks away. I think my dog is still shaking,” the user complained.
Others blasted whoever was responsible for allegedly leaving behind a mess on the popular beach.
“Ya and they left all of the trash it created afterwords. I’m all for fun but clean up after yourself,” another commenter fumed.
But the spectacular stunt wasn’t just a nuisance for neighbors, it was also a blatant violation of San Francisco’s strict fireworks ban.
All fireworks are prohibited within city limits, including products marketed as “safe and sane,” which are permitted in some other California communities.
City officials recently moved to crack down even harder on residents who insist on setting off their own explosive displays.
Under a new ordinance approved in July, violators face fines of up to $250 for a first offense. A second violation within five years could result in a fine of up to $750, six months behind bars or both.
The latest beachside blowout comes just three months after San Francisco was rocked by another wave of illegal fireworks during Fourth of July celebrations marking America’s 250th birthday.
The Mission District was particularly hard-hit, with block after block transformed into makeshift launchpads for unauthorized fireworks displays.
Some residents described the explosive scenes as resembling a war zone, while streets were left littered with debris, per ABC7.
The situation grew so unruly that San Francisco police officers wearing riot gear moved in after 10 p.m., shutting down streets and dispersing hundreds of revelers.
Firefighters also scrambled to respond to more than 500 calls on July 4, including spot fires and injuries involving fireworks.
It was not immediately clear who was responsible for Saturday night’s massive Ocean Beach display or whether authorities were investigating.
But the latest explosive spectacle has once again put San Francisco’s ongoing battle against illegal fireworks in the spotlight.
