TODAY’S PICK — FREE ART ON PAULISTA
MASP, then a walk that stays dry
Get to MASP on Avenida Paulista by 11am. Tuesday entry is free, and the museum runs until 8pm, with last entry at 7pm. Book a free time slot online first; it is mandatory.
The permanent collection hangs on Lina Bo Bardi’s glass easels, with European masters and Brazilian moderns on one floor.
Afterwards, head to Japan House at Avenida Paulista, 52 for its free exhibitions. It is open until 6pm, and the building itself is worth the stop.
Metrô Trianon-Masp on Line 2 serves MASP; Japan House is about 2 km east, near Brigadeiro station, one stop along. The single fare is R$5.40 (about US$1.03).
Take the umbrella for the walk between stations.
OUTDOORS — THE SHORT WINDOW
Ibirapuera only if the storms hold off
Parque Ibirapuera opens daily from 5am to midnight and is free. Check the radar before you go.
Enter at the gate near Metrô AACD-Servidor on Line 5. The lakeside path is paved and drains quickly.
If storms roll in, skip it. Friday will be cool and damp, so the park is best left for a drier day.
COFFEE & WHERE TO WORK — PINHEIROS
Specialty coffee with a laptop
Coffee Lab, the specialty roaster, has cafés at Rua Aspicuelta, 227 in Vila Madalena and Rua Fernão Dias, 682 in Pinheiros.
Praça Benedito Calixto, a short walk away, is ringed by cafés for a quieter corner.

Farol Santander and Mercadão, the old city way
Take the Metrô to São Bento for Farol Santander on Rua João Brícola, 24. It is open today from 9am to 8pm, with last tickets at 7pm. Tickets cost R$45 (about US$8.61), or R$22.50 (about US$4.31) at half price.
The observation deck at the top gives wide views over the city centre.
Before that, lunch at the Mercadão (Mercado Municipal), famous for its mortadella sandwiches.

Brazilian dinner, then live jazz
Book a table at Jiquitaia, Rua Coronel Oscar Porto, 808, in Paraíso, for Brazilian cooking listed in the Michelin Guide.
São Paulo is also a pizza city; most neighbourhoods have a good wood-fired pizzeria within walking distance.
For live jazz or blues, check tonight’s line-up at Bourbon Street Music Club in Moema before you go.
Take a ride app home late at night rather than walking empty streets alone.

TRANSPORT
Metrô and CPTM run normal Tuesday service. The single Metrô fare is R$5.40 (about US$1.03), and you can pay by contactless card at the gates.
Today’s rodízio restricts plates ending 3 and 4 from 7am to 10am and 5pm to 8pm in the expanded centre. Ride-app prices tend to surge when storms hit.

Lunch: Around Paulista, many restaurants serve a set executive lunch on weekdays; the side streets toward Alameda Santos have the widest choice.
Dinner: Jiquitaia in Paraíso (see above) is the pick. For Japanese food, Liberdade, one Metrô ride away on Line 1, has dozens of options.
