It was one of the most technologically advanced empires in history...But the Romans may have been battling with cognitive decline due to pollution, according to a study...Researchers suggest that widespread lead pollution - caused by mining - lowered the IQ of essentially the entire European population at the time.

"Ancient lead pollution stemmed largely from silver mining, when the lead-rich mineral galena was melted down to extract silver."

This is why we need to go green, has nothing to do with the moral decline...nothing at all...like America’s schools or no school at all during covid

“cognitive decline due to pollution”

Why oh why did we dump Biden? Just a little fresh air and he would have been good as new.

They talked about this in the 80s or 90s, lead in their drinking cups and all that. I don’t think this is a new idea.

How was the IQ of Europeans 2000 years ago determined?

“may have” “Researchers suggest that” turns into “Scientists solve mystery” in the headline.

The real mystery that solves is that the article is crap.

What a garbage study.

The causal linkage of tiny amounts of lead to cognitive decline is hotly contested.

This is the basis of the whole study.

They cannot directly measure IQ for the population of the area, so they assume the IQ was reduced based on other questionable “studies”.

Silly premise.

Ludicrous. As large as Roman mining operations were (look as Las Medulas in Spain), the notion that this produced enough lead pollution to lower the general IQ is simply nonsense, especially given that ore was smelted in situ because there were no trains to carry it close to cities.

The Romans also had lead plumbing.

Alternatively Romans could have NOT altered their environment. Altered ores and metals allowed for building, food, roads, trade medicine. So what are you gonna do?

If only they paid Rome more taxes, then this would not have happened!

“And it was Muslims.”

There were no Muslims 2000 years ago.
