Scientists sound alarm as lethal fungal infection tearing through hospitals kills a third of patients

A lethal super-fungal infection is tearing through hospital wards, claiming the lives of roughly one in three patients who contract the disease, experts have warned.

Invasive mould diseases, which were once considered relatively uncommon, may in fact be significantly more prevalent than medical professionals had recognised, according to new research that suggests millions could ultimately be at risk.


While the infections present minimal danger to otherwise healthy individuals, they prove devastating for those whose immune systems are already compromised - precisely the sort of vulnerable patients most likely to be found in hospital settings.

The findings have prompted specialists to raise the alarm about what they describe as a growing and potentially catastrophic public health challenge that demands urgent attention from governments worldwide.

Research published by the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention documented 499 instances of invasive mould infections across hospitals in the Atlanta metropolitan area over a four-year period from 2020 to 2024.

The severity of these cases proved striking, with 43 per cent of all patients requiring treatment in intensive care units.

Approximately one third of those diagnosed did not survive their hospital stay.

Looking ahead, the CDC study estimated that medical facilities could anticipate between three and five new cases annually for every 100 inpatient beds.

Scientists behind the research called on clinicians to "be vigilant" for such infections, describing them as a "life-threatening complication" for critically unwell or immunosuppressed patients.

Tracking the true scale of the problem remains difficult, however, as invasive mould infections are not classified as a nationally notifiable condition in the United States.

Mould infections take hold when patients inhale airborne spores or when the organisms enter the body through open wounds.

Once established, the disease attacks blood vessels, deep tissue and vital organs, causing severe and frequently fatal illness.

Aspergillus is among the most widespread varieties. The NHS notes it can be found in soil, compost heaps, decaying foliage, household dust, bedding, damp properties and air conditioning units.

Telltale signs of infection include breathlessness, persistent coughing, wheezing, elevated temperature, fatigue and unexplained weight loss.

Within healthcare settings, outbreaks remain uncommon but carry grave consequences when they do occur.

Building works, water leaks, improperly managed laundry and contaminated surgical instruments or medical supplies have all been identified as potential triggers for hospital-based clusters of infection.

Antifungal resistance - whereby the fungus ceases to respond to available treatments - represents what the World Health Organisation has termed a "growing threat," fuelled partly by the overuse of antifungal medications.

Aspergillus fumigatus, one of the most common moulds, has progressively developed resistance to widely prescribed drugs across numerous countries.

Earlier this year, 50 of the world's foremost researchers warned that drug-resistant fungal infections are appearing with increasing frequency on hospital wards.

Professor Paul Verweij, a medical microbiology specialist at Radboud University in the Netherlands, said: "We are already seeing a quiet rise in dangerous fungi, from Candida auris in intensive care units to moulds in the community that no longer respond to standard medicines."

The WHO has ranked 19 fungal pathogens by their threat to humanity, placing Aspergillus fumigatus among them.

Dr Jeremy Gold, a senior author of the CDC study, told The Independent that the danger posed by deadly mould infections is likely to intensify in the years ahead, driven by shifting weather patterns and an increasingly elderly population.

Simiarly, Dr Jeffrey Jenks, an infectious disease specialist at Duke University who was not part of the research, echoed those concerns. "I agree that the frequency of fungal infections will likely increase with climate change," he said.

The researchers have urged governments and international bodies to treat antifungal resistance as a priority before the window for effective intervention closes entirely.

Professor Mike Bromley, a fungal biology expert at the University of Manchester, offered a stark assessment: "If we don't act, we will see more infections that simply can't be cured, which puts lives and food supplies at risk."
