Democrat Sen. John Fetterman declared his support for GOP Rep. Elise Stefanik’s nomination to serve as US Ambassador to the United Nations — and pledged to help the New York lawmaker hold “the UN accountable for its endemic antisemitism and blatant anti-Israel views.”
“Always was a hard YES for @EliseStefanik but it was a pleasure to have a conversation. I support defunding UNRWA for its documented Hamas infiltration and fully look forward to her holding the @UN accountable for its endemic antisemitism and blatant anti-Israel views,” Fetterman (D-Pa.) wrote on X.
The former lieutenant governor of Pennsylvania was responding to a photo shared by Stefanik, who represents New York’s 21st congressional district, which shows the pair smiling and flashing a thumbs up.
Stefanik also thanked Fetterman in the post for hosting a meeting for them to discuss their “shared commitment to standing with Israel and combatting antisemitism.”
In a statement to The Post, the upstate congresswoman said she was “honored” to earn the support of Fetterman and she looks forward to working with more lawmakers on both sides of the aisle in her new role.
“These issues are not partisan or political but moral. I look forward to continuing to work with my Senate and House colleagues to bring President Trump’s America First peace through strength national security agenda to the UN,” Stefanik said.
“Over the last three weeks, I have had the opportunity to sit down with over half of the United States Senate including members on both sides of the aisle and look forward to earning more support throughout the confirmation process,” she added.
Last month, Stefanik accepted President-elect Donald Trump’s offer to be his enforcer as United Nations ambassador.
The 40-year-old upstate Republican, who helped force out two Ivy League presidents with her sharp questioning on campus antisemitism, will be in charge of spreading Trump’s “America first” and pro-Israel message.
“I am honored to nominate Chairwoman Elise Stefanik to serve in my Cabinet as US Ambassador to the United Nations. Elise is an incredibly strong, tough, and smart America First fighter,” Trump, 78, said while announcing Stefanik as his nominee last month.
Stefanik, the No. 4 House Republican, has been a close Trump ally, including serving on his ceremonial defense team in 2020 during his first impeachment trial for pressuring Ukraine to investigate alleged Biden family corruption.
“I am truly honored to earn President Trump’s nomination to serve in his Cabinet as US Ambassador to the United Nations,” Stefanik said in a statement confirming her acceptance of the role.
“During my conversation with President Trump, I shared how deeply humbled I am to accept his nomination and that I look forward to earning the support of my colleagues in the United States Senate,” she continued.
“President Trump’s historic landslide election has given hope to the American people and is a reminder that brighter days are ahead — both at home and abroad.”
