In a blow against anti-Israel insanity, the House passed a bill Thursday slamming the International Criminal Court for its ludicrous campaign against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The bill, dubbed the “Illegitimate Court Counteraction Act,” sanctions ICC officials and “any foreign actor who supports the ICC’s effort to investigate, arrest, detain, or prosecute protected persons of the United States and its allies,” including Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.
After a bogus investigation meant to humiliate Israel’s leaders, the ICC charged Netanyahu and Gallant with “crimes against humanity and war crimes committed from at least 8 October 2023 until at least 20 May 2024” and issued arrest warrants in November.
Neither the US nor Israel recognizes the authority of the ICC, meaning the kangaroo court has no jurisdiction in either nation.
The ICC’s relentless overstepping and demonization of Israel (while Hamas still holds Israeli and American hostages) is a middle finger to the US.
The act serves to remind the court (and the rest of the world) that stomping on Uncle Sam’s toes still has consequences, and puts Israel-hating ICC prosecutor Karim Khan “back in his place,” as House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) put it.
The Senate should move fast to pass it.
The bill has bipartisan support, and Democrats in the Senate have been signaling that they’re willing to work with Republicans on common-sense issues.
Several Dem senators (Jon Tester, Mark Kelly, John Fetterman, Gary Peters, Jon Ossoff and Ruben Gallego) have broken with the party line to throw their support behind the Laken Riley Act, which mandates the detention of illegal migrants arrested, charged or convicted for “burglary, theft, larceny or shoplifting.”
That proves that some Democrats in the Senate are willing to work with Republicans on common-sense issues rather than filibuster everything in the name of “resistance.”
So the Illegitimate Court Counteraction Act may not die in partisan gridlock. Good — it shouldn’t.
As President-elect Donald Trump enters the White House, Washington needs to let our allies (and enemies) know that the Biden era of rolling over in the face of naked aggression is dead.
The ICC sanctions bill is a great place to start.
