A 24-year-old San Diego County man died by electrocution while installing Christmas lights on the roof of a home last week, officials said.

The accident happened on Thursday, Nov. 21, in Escondido. According to the San Diego County Medical Examiner, Antonio Pascual Mateo was hanging Christmas lights near a high-voltage power line.

“The decedent threw the lights over the power line resulting in electrocution,” the medical examiner said.

Someone called 911, and paramedics arrived at the home on Skyline Drive to find Mateo hanging upside down from a tree. He was transported to Palomar Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Wasn’t it Chevy Chase who got carried away with Christmas lights?

Poor guy...so sorry for him and his family during what should be a joyous time.

No Christmas lights for us again this year. Safety first!

“The decedent threw the lights over the power line resulting in electrocution,”

Don’t throw a string of Christmas lights over a high voltage power line, and don’t hang Christmas light before Thanksgiving.

“..and then for wherever reason, he threw the electric Christmas lights over the electric power cords. After that, it was basically Lights Out..,”

In all the world, a man hanging Christmas lights has a heart attack and dies? What are the odds?;-)

There are times when I think I might die from a heart attack from cleaning out the litter boxes...the cleaning of which is/are significantly more strenuous than hanging Christmas lights. And I clean the litter boxes every day.;-)

On the other hand, I think litter box cleaning should be an Olympic Sport. No trannies please.

That just sucks.

I have a similar story, from college.

I was at a Friday physics tradition where we would drink Molsons with our professors and talk physics, when the lights went out.

Turns out it was someone I knew who was raising some sort of pole, for some sports function or another, near some high-tension wires.

The entire power requirements of the college went through this guys body,

I hung Christmas lights off my two-story Colonial for several decades until I gave it up and bought a condo. My biggest fear howeever was always falling off the ladder. Not the way this one happened.

“”Pascal said the money raised would help the family pay for Mateo’s transport and burial in his native Guatemala.””

I’m amazed that people want to come live here but they don’t want to be buried here. The article didn’t state if he lived in the home or possibly was an “illegal” and he was doing it to earn money and unfamiliar with power lines? Supporting his family sending money back to Guatemala is what they do.

An old shipmate of mine died when he fell off the ladder while hanging Christmas lights on his Virginia home. Sad.
