When Kelvin Tsui Ka-hei saw how much waste in Hong Kong was generated each day by single-use plastics from takeaway meals amid the Covid-19 pandemic, he was inspired to make a change.

Tsui co-founded ReCube with chief operating officer Amy Lai Sui-fong in January of 2023 in the hopes of reducing waste and making sustainability accessible to consumers and businesses alike.

The company offers reusable containers that can be borrowed from participating restaurants, with the meal boxes tracked through an app.

Users earn rewards for taking part in the scheme and restaurants benefit from reduced packaging costs.

“Our goal was to show that sustainability does not have to be difficult or expensive – it can actually save them money,” CEO Tsui said.

Tsui has been shortlisted for the 2024 Spirit of Hong Kong Awards in the category of entrepreneurship.
