It’s an unexpected fashion twist, but over the years the wardrobes of the Duchess of Sussex and Melania Trump have become strikingly similar.

Seemingly sharing the same fashion DNA, the duo like a clean line and a minimal look, in everything from sophisticated cape-sleeve evening gowns to casual varsity jackets.

For both Meghan and Melania, the cape-sleeve gown marks a key piece in their wardrobes.

Whether in a bold red hue or embellished with glittering beads, they have a preference for dramatic couture at state events that combines Hollywood glamour with a twist of royal elegance.

And it's not just evening wear. Meghan and Melania's matching fashion choices go beyond the red carpet, extending to double-breasted coats and trench dresses, always cinched at the waist and accentuating their figures.

The style twins also have a shared love for the same luxury designers. Whether it is Philip Treacy’s iconic hats or Givenchy and Dior’s signature elegance, Melania and Meghan’s wardrobes consistently overlap in taste.

Embellished Cape Dresses

Floor-length cape silhouettes with intricately embellished cascading draped sleeves have both been worn by the ladies for evening events.

The stunning resemblance of both dresses worn just a few months apart shows they share the same fashion tastes

Meghan set the trend in 2019 during a trip to Morocco wearing a bespoke Dior creation which skimmed over her pregnancy bump. Later in the year Melania looked suitably festive for the Congressional Ball in the same champagne hue with beaded sleeves by Reem Acra.

Red Carpet Gowns

Similarly dressing with clean lines for a minimal American-style look, both Meghan and Melania were ladies in red, choosing cape gowns for red carpet appearances.

The fact that Melania's red dress  was by Meghan's favourite designer, Givenchy, speaks volumes for the women's matching tastes

During Melania and Donald Trump’s UK tour in 2019 the First Lady opted for a red cape gown for a Winfield House dinner by Meghan’s go-to designer Givenchy. A year later, at the Mountbatten Music Festival when completing their farewell tour of the UK, Meghan mirrored the ensemble in a near identical Safiyaa frock with matching cape sleeves, sleek wavy locks and statement earrings.

Slice Hats

It seems both Meghan and Melania are fans of a Philip Treacy 'slice' hat complemented with a down or a chic up-do.

The near identical choice of hats by both women is uncanny and shows how similar their fashion tastes are

Meghan wore the natural straw style - which was custom-made - when celebrating the Queen's birthday at Trooping the Colour in 2018, pairing it with a pale pink, off-the-shoulder Carolina Herrera dress. Melania is also a fan of milliner Philip Treacy and wore a very similar cream style for the D-Day 75th anniversary commemorations a year later together with a coat by The Row.

Trench Dress Tailoring

For a White House National Day of Prayer service in the Rose Garden in 2020, Melania opted for a Dior sleeveless khaki-hued trench dress with buttons up the front.

She accessorized the look with a slim belt at the waist and snakeskin Christian Louboutin pumps. In 2018 Markle wore a very similar outfit which was also cinched in at the waist, this time by ethical Canadian brand House of Nonie, when visiting the Nelson Mandela Centenary Exhibition.

Waist Belts

For Meghan's first royal engagement with the Queen as a newlywed in 2018 she wore a frock by the designer of her wedding dress, Clare Waight Keller for Givenchy.

Both women look incredible in these strikingly similar outfits worn a month apart, both when they were with the late Queen Elizabeth II

Standing side by side with the late Queen, Meghan was elegant and radiant in ivory with a pencil silhouette and slim belt. Just a month later the First Lady stood with Her Majesty at Windsor Castle, donning a tailored skirt suit from Christian Dior for the occasion. Also featuring a narrow belt and covered shoulders, the pale shade of cream allowed the resplendent late monarch’s outfit to pop.

Grey Coats

At a dawn service for Anzac Day in 2018 the Duchess of Sussex chose a sombre but smart outfit.

Both were attending sombre occasions and chose almost identical outfits two years apart

Her Matthew Williamson bespoke double-breasted design featured large lapels and double pockets, details which were seen on Melania’s Altuzarra grey coat two years later during a wreath-laying ceremony for the 75th Anniversary of Victory in Europe Day. Both opted for simple black pumps - Melania’s from Manolo Blahnik and Meghan’s by Sarah Flint, together with loose waves to complete the matching looks.
