A Suffolk County cop was airlifted to the hospital with serious injuries after his patrol car was involved in a nasty crash on the Long Island Expressway Sunday night, according to police.

The crash happened around 6:10 p.m. near exit 55 in Brentwood, Suffolk County police said.

The police officer, who suffered serious physical injuries, was taken to an area hospital by helicopter, according to the department.

The chopper landed on the shuttered section of the normally busy highway, according to a News 12 crew that was on the scene.

Multiple cars appeared to have crashed between exits 53 and 55, according to News 12.

More information about the officer’s condition was not immediately clear and it was not immediately known what led up to the crash.

Detectives from the police department’s major case unit were investigating the scene with lane closures affecting the westbound side into Sunday night.
