A Tajikistani migrant has been jailed after subjecting a 13-year-old girl to an "abhorrent" sexual assault on a train.

Abdulmanon Aliev, 50, was jailed for 12 years at Inner London Crown Court yesterday.

In April, he was found guilty of attempted rape, two counts of assault by penetration and three counts of sexual assault.

Described as a "despicable sex offender", Aliev approached the teenager through a translator app on a train heading into London from Essex on June 16 last year, a court heard.

When the girl attempted to move away from the Aliev, he followed her and eventually trapped her in by sitting in an aisle seat next to her.

He proceeded to subject her to a drawn-out sexual assault, the court heard.

Aliev had denied the offences, claiming he only touched himself in front of the 13-year-old girl due to a skin condition.

British Transport Police Constable Elizabeth Cahill said the case was "one of the most abhorrent sexual assaults" she has ever investigated.

"Aliev singled out a vulnerable child and subjected her to one of the most abhorrent sexual assaults I’ve ever investigated.

"While the focus of attention will rightly be on him as the despicable sexual predator that he is, I want to pay tribute to the brave victim who reported him to police.

“His conviction and 12-year jail term would not have been possible without her account of what happened and her willingness to support our investigation.

“We take every sexual offence report extremely seriously, and we’ll stop at nothing to ensure vile offenders like Aliev are put behind bars where they belong," she said.

Originally from Tajikistan, a country located in central Asia, landlocked by Afghanistan, China, Krygzstan and Uzbekistan, the sex offender was living in Rye Lane, south east London.

After the assault, the victim departed the train at Fenchurch Street station and boarded another one going back the way she came, leaving Aliev behind.

She bravely retold what had happened to her to members of the public after she was found in a distressed state, who informed the police.

The British Transport Police launched an investigation to identify Aliev, analysing hours of CCTV to track his movements before and after the assault.

On June 27 he was apprehended by plain clothes police officers in Peckham, south London.

His home address was searched, with officers seizing the clothes he wore on the day of the attack.

He will be on the sex offenders register for life.

The victim and her family have been supported by specialist officers.
