Taylor Swift’s arrival Thursday in Toronto included a ridiculously over-the-top motorcade and the shutdown of a major highway.
A viral video shows police-led vehicles snaking down an open highway, and it’s getting worldwide attention for all the wrong reasons. Security concerns are understandable for Swift, who had to cancel an “Eras Tour” show in Vienna in August after government officials confirmed a planned terrorist attack. But a motorcade of this magnitude seems more aligned with Hollywood spectacle than genuine safety measures — and it’s a terrible reflection of the state of our society and the priorities of those in charge.
At what point did we get so caught up in the lives of famous singers that we felt it appropriate to surround them with so much pomp and circumstance? Bear in mind, the people who foot the bill for this expensive and expansive drain of resources are the taxpayers.
If they had a say in how their tax dollars are spent, my guess is that they would prioritize the safety of their community over shelling out all of this money for a singer to come and perform. This seems like an excessive display to offer a celebrity.
They had to shut down downtown Toronto to make way for Taylor Swift’s motorcade. She’s more important than all these Canadian peasants. Hunger Games vibes, anyone? pic.twitter.com/WYD4kyFTQS
