A Hawaii surfer is lucky to be alive after being chewed up and spat out by a monster wave that was captured in dramatic video.
Ty Simpson-Kane was the surfer caught on camera in the incredible moment he took on the huge wave on Peahi beach, also known as Jaws, on Maui's north shore.
The world-famous beach is a hotspot for surfers and known for its super-sized waves.
The video showed Simpson-Kane being thrown from his board and flipped upside down five times before he vanished beneath the water surface.
Instagram account fishbowldiaries, run by Sofie and Paul, caught the incredible moment on camera.
The surfer was brought to shore by safety teams. He shared his gratitude on social media afterwards, describing it as one of the heaviest 'wipe outs' he'd ever experienced.
