Tesla has been forced to recall almost 240,000 vehicles amid concerns that drivers could be involved in accidents relating to a rear camera issue.

In new documents filed with the United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a total of 239,382 vehicles are part of the recall.

In a small percentage of affected vehicles, drivers may see the loss of rearview camera functionality when they power the vehicle up.

It has been reported that this is down to a "reverse current" which may cause a shorting failure on the car computer board. It also does not comply with FMVSS 111, S5.5 and S6.2 in the US.

The loss of the rearview camera display may impact the driver's rear visibility and increase the risk of a collision.

The NHTSA documents state that the driver may continue to reverse the vehicle by performing a shoulder check and using their measures.

As part of the notice, the following models will be recalled:

  • Tesla Model 3 (2024-2025)
  • Tesla Model S (2024-2025)
  • Tesla Model X (2023-2025)
  • Tesla Model Y (2023-2025)

As of December 30, 2024, Tesla identified 887 warranty claims and 68 field reports related to the issue. However, it is not aware of any collisions, injuries or fatalities.

On November 21, 2024, Tesla said it "observed an increase in car computer replacements" relating to shorting failures, prompting an investigation to be launched five days later.

The remedy has already been pushed out to motorists on December 18, 2024, through an over-the-air software update that changes the vehicle power-up sequence to prevent the issue from occurring.

Tesla also stated that if an affected vehicle experienced the shorting failure condition that led to the shorting failure prior to installing the software update, it will replace the vehicle's car computer at no cost to the customer.
