Netflix has released the trailer for “The Altruists,” the Anthony Boyle and Julia Garner-led drama inspired by the real-life story of “Gen Z’s own Bonnie & Clyde,” Sam Bankman-Fried and Caroline Ellison. The eight-episode limited series hits the streamer on Nov. 19.
Per the show’s official logline, “The Altruists” tells the story of Bankman-Fried (Boyle) and Ellison (Garner), “two hyper-smart, ambitious young idealists who tried to remake the global financial system in the blink of an eye — before they were accused of stealing $8 billion.”
Bankman-Fried founded the failed FTX cryptocurrency exchange in 2019, before ultimately being sentenced to 25 years in prison when a federal jury convicted him on seven counts of fraud and conspiracy related to the collapse of his cryptocurrency company and related hedge fund. The U.S. government alleged that Bankman-Fried had cheated investors and customers out of upwards of $10 billion through FTX and his crytpo trading firm Alameda Research.
Ellison was the CEO of Alameda Research, a trading firm affiliated with FTX, and was in a relationship with Bankman-Fried.
In addition to Boyle and Garner, Alex Lawther (Sam Trabucco), Karan Soni (Nishad Singh), Naomi Okada (Claire Watanabe), Madison Hu (Constance Wang), Matt Rife (Ryan Salame) and Eugene Young (Gary Wang) star. Additional cast members include Hudson Williams, Paul Reiser, Robin Weigert, Maddie Hasson, Marianna Phung, Jennifer Grey, Terry Chen, William Mapother, Jack Greenlees, Elizabeth Adams, Hannah Galway, Donald Heng, David James Lewis and Jasmine Lukuku.
“The Altruists” was inspired by the New York Magazine articles written by Kevin T. Dugan and Jen Wieczner.
Executive producers include Graham Moore, Jacqueline Hoyt, Barack and Michelle Obama, Jessie Dicovitsky and Vinnie Malhotra for Higher Ground Productions, Scoop Wasserstein for New York Magazine/Vox Media Studios, Garner, Tonia Davis, James Ponsoldt and Lauren Morelli.
