Suella Braverman has mocked protesters attempting to stop her Oxford Union appearance.

Speaking on GB News, the ex-Home Secretary declared victory in her free speech battle shortly after speaking at the debating society.

She appeared gleeful while telling Michelle Dewberry those attempting to shut her down “didn’t win”.

“I’ve just finished speaking at the Oxford Union. I don’t know if you can hear the protesters but there was an attempt to no-platform me”, she said.

“Any attempts to cancel or no-platform are undermining freedom of speech.”

The decision not to launch an inquiry into the murder of MP Sir David Amess, who was killed in 2021 by Ali Harbi Ali, a British Islamic State sympathiser, was raised as Braverman was asked if attempts to shut her down are “frightening”, given the potential for it to be taken too far by potentially radicalised members of the public.

“It actually emboldens me”, she said.

“I know we must not be cowed by the mob. We have all got a right to express ourselves within the bounds of the law and I am an elected politician.

“I am speaking for millions of people. Those who try to silence me should know better. They have spent time in the rain banging their drums and they are free to do that.

“But they didn’t win.”

The protest was launched by the Oxford Palestine Solidarity Campaign, who urged students to stand against Braverman’s appearance at the historic society.

They told followers on X Braverman “backs Israeli war crimes and opposes peaceful protest”.

A poster promoting the rebellion told participants: “Bring your flags, keffiyehs and voices to refuse her presence in our community, and the platforming of apologism for Israel’s occupation, apartheid and genocide in Palestine.”
