SAN DIEGO — President Donald Trump has ordered the deployment of additional military personnel to the U.S.-Mexico border and canceled a key asylum application system, sparking controversy and concern among local residents and border crossers.
Military officials confirmed to CBS 8 that approximately 500 Marines and sailors from Camp Pendleton will be sent to the southern border as part of an “immediate augmentation of military active-duty forces.”
This move comes as President Trump declared a national emergency at the southern border on his first day in office. Simultaneously, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) shut down the CBP One app, which previously allowed migrants to apply for legal entry into the U.S. as asylum-seekers.
= “A lot of people in those communities don’t want them…this was a gross miscarriage of common sense to let people come in,” said President Trump.
