President Donald Trump, headlining the Republicans’ first-ever rally ahead of a midterm election, told a crowd gathered in Dallas, Texas, Wednesday night that he will issue a $5,000 dividend to every adult citizen in the United States if Republicans secure a majority in Congress on Nov. 3.
The president cited the United States’ strong economy that is “making so much money” as the reason he was able to make such a promise.
“Here is my promise,” Trump said. “If the Republicans win the House of Representatives and the United States Senate, both of them ... because of our tremendous strength and success economically, I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States of America for $5,000.”
“The only caveat I have is that the dividend that we’re making must be spent in the United States of America,” he added.
He did not elaborate further on the details of his proposal.
Trump also repeated a message he’s made during recent primary races, saying that voters should vote like he is on the ballot.
“I’m asking you to pretend that I’m on the ballot … just one more time,” he said. “Because if we lose, you’re going to lose your border, you’re going to lose your tax cuts, you’re going to lose your safety and security.”
Republican candidates, policymakers, social media influencers, and political organizations were among the thousands of attendees at the two-day convention. Organizers said beforehand they expected about 20,000 people, with tickets for the public being assigned via a lottery.
Day two of the GOP rally will feature a keynote speech from Vice President JD Vance. Trump is scheduled to close out the convention.
