CV NEWS FEED // President-elect Donald Trump has appointed pro-life physician Dr. Marty Makary as head of the Federal Drug Administration (FDA), opening the possibility of reversing the agency’s illegal approval of the abortion pill.

Makary, a surgical oncologist at Johns Hopkins University, will lead the FDA under the guidance of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. whom Trump nominated to head the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) last week.

“I am confident that Dr. Makary, having dedicated his career to High-Quality, Lower-Cost Care, will restore FDA to the Gold Standard of Scientific Research, and cut the bureaucratic red tape at the Agency to make sure Americans get the Medical Cures and Treatments they deserve,” Trump said in a statement announcing Makary’s nomination.

Signaling his pro-life stance, on June 24, 2022, Dr. Makary marked the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision by speaking with then-Fox News host Tucker Carlson about abortion from a pro-life medical perspective.

Dr. Makary affirmed in the interview that beginning around 15 weeks, the baby in utero can feel pain and will react to the instruments of the abortionist.

“Somewhere between 15 and 20 weeks, babies will actually resist the instruments of abortion,” he said.

One of the most common methods of abortion, called D&E, involves the horrific practice of dismemberment of the baby limb by limb, ending with the crushing of the baby’s skull before removing the fetal remains from the mother’s womb.

Dr. Makary said in the Fox News interview that he witnessed an abortion during his training as a medical student and saw the baby avoid the instruments of the abortionist. “It doesn’t matter which side you protest on around this issue, if you see the actual images of what’s happening and a baby resisting an abortion, it’ll weigh on your conscience,” he told Tucker Carlson.

In the interview, Dr. Makary also drew attention to the contradictory approach within medicine to babies that have reached the age of viability. Pointing out that Roe v. Wade was based on viability, Dr. Makary noted that advances in medical technology have pushed the age of viability earlier in pregnancy.

He also pointed out that babies at the same gestational age are treated in opposite ways, “based on circumstances.”

“Ironically, we sometimes do fetal surgery on a baby inside the womb of the mother to save the baby’s life, and yet at the same age in other settings, surgical instruments are used to abort a baby,” he said.

Dr. Makary lamented the climate of capitulation and silence that surrounds abortion within the medical field.

“Today, you can barely talk about it,” he said. “Nurses can get fired if they don’t participate, medical students are ridiculed, most of the professional medical associations have taken a political stand now supporting abortion right up until the third trimester.”

The appointment of a pro-life doctor to head the FDA comes as pro-lifers continue efforts to reverse the FDA’s approval of the mail-in abortion pill mifepristone, which the pro-abortion Guttmacher Institute estimates accounts for up to 63 percent of abortions nationwide.

In October 2024, the attorneys general of Missouri, Idaho, and Kansas, filed a revised lawsuit seeking to reverse several FDA actions that allowed for the expanded distribution of mifepristone with little or no medical supervision or regulatory oversight.

The American Life League (ALL) praised the attorneys general for taking legal action “to protect women and children from the broad, unregulated, and patently unsafe distribution of chemical abortion drugs.”

ALL National Director Katie Brown, said in a statement that she was “hopeful” the lawsuit “will put a stop to the deadly abortion pill drug cartel, which illegally traffics these unregulated drugs illegally across our border, into states with abortion restrictions.”

“Thanks to the FDA, we have no idea of how many women and babies have paid the ultimate price due to unfettered access to chemical abortion,” she said. “The cases that we do know about are heart-breaking, and only scratch the surface of the demonic attempt to make these pills so accessible.”

“It is our hope and prayer that this suit will expose the abortion pill for what it is, a barbaric practice that takes an innocent life every single time,” Brown said.

Referencing ALL’s abortion pill report, ALL Vice President Hugh Brown, in an October statement, said “Every state in America should sue the FDA, along with Planned Parenthood, the facilitator and referral agent, and hold them accountable. The indifference and lack of concern for this horrific criminal enterprise is mind boggling.”

Brown encouraged every state attorney general to review the ALL report, Beneath the Surface: Exposing the Abortion Pill Drug Cartel, and to join the lawsuit.
