Trump taps the leader of his personal detail to run the US Secret Service

President-elect Donald Trump is expected to pick his current Secret Service detail leader, Sean Curran, to be the new director of the United States Secret Service, according to multiple sources familiar with the decision.

For the past four years, Curran has led Trump’s detail and is known to have a close, personal relationship with the president-elect, sources said.

Several sources, however, also raised significant concerns that Curran lacks the managerial experience to run an agency as large and complex as the Secret Service. On Trump’s detail, Curran supervised about 85 people. He has never managed the kind of budget or operations of the Secret Service.

Further, multiple sources point out that Curran has never held a position at the agency’s headquarters and is not a member of the Senior Executive Service, which comprises the highest ranks in the service.

Curran would replace acting Director Ronald Rowe, who had lobbied for the job after Kim Cheatle resigned after the first assassination attempt on Trump’s life at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, in July. In September, another man in Florida set up a “sniper’s nest” outside of Trump’s golf club as part of an apparent second assassination attempt on Trump.

Curran’s ascent is atypical due to his rank and lack of headquarters experience. Other former agents who later became directors rose through the agency’s headquarters, such as Mark Sullivan and Jim Murray, and were already members of the Senior Executive Service.

However, Curran’s rank fails to capture the responsibility of running Trump’s detail – even during years when Trump was neither president nor candidate. After leaving office, Trump’s risk level far outpaced his position as simply “a former.”

Only professional affirmative-action DIE bureaucrats are qualified to do that!

That, in itself, should be a requirement for the position.

Trump’s first priority is putting a guy in charge whom he is reasonably confident won’t set him up for assassination.

All other concerns are secondary.

Well, if the previous people in charge of the Secret Service had the managerial experience to run a large agency, that’s good indicator that such experience is worthless. It might even be a disqualifying factor.

Why, o why, would CNN be stupid enough to disparage someone for that reason? Could there be something wrong with CNN?

In hindsight, this man appears to have not been up to the job in butler, PA. He should have recognized that the whole operation was not up to par. IMO

I think Bongino is very happy with his current gig,, and his life in general. I think he would’ve turned down the job if Trump offered it to him.

He’d be a great consultant, though!

Recruitment and training standards appear to be the critical problems at this point. Beyond that, interagency coordination is a big part of the job. I was recently on a grand jury and sat for a month dealing with whatever. The substantial majority of the police officers who testified were MPD, both uniformed officers and detectives, but I was surprised at the number of Secret Service and Park Police officers who were called. I can only recall one incident involving a Secret Service agent on the White House detail, and that originated with a traffic situation in close proximity to the WH. But the Secret Service has a much bigger footprint covering a swath of downtown, and we heard from a number of these SS agents as well; it is involved with protection of foreign dignitaries and foreign diplomatic missions, where it works closely with the State Department’s Diplomatic Protection Service. The Park Police, U.S. Capitol Police, and the Transit Police also have presence all over the area. I don’t know how many independent police services we have in the DC metro area; the number 17 dimly rings a bell, but it is probably higher when you start counting the suburban jurisdictions. They all have overlapping jurisdictions and are supposed to back each other up.

He was never part of the advance team so any of the many foul ups were not of his doing.
