Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces (SSO) captured nine Russian troops who were forced into surrendering after a building was blown up beside them, intense new video shows.
Footage of the surrender, posted to Facebook on Monday, shows the SSO demanding from loudspeakers mounted on drones that the remainder of a Russian battalion give themselves up in a destroyed industrial complex in Pokrovsk, in the Donetsk region.
When the Russians refuse, the Ukrainian forces detonate a nearby building, sending ash and debris flying and rocking the ground near the huddled invaders.
Moments later, the Russian fighters send someone to wave a white flag of surrender from a destroyed window in the dilapidated building.
Ukrainian drones kept an eye on the Russian soldiers as they emerged one by one from the destroyed complex and into the custody Kyiv’s special forces.
During the surrender, a Ukrainian soldier could be seen holding a large pipe to help the Russians climb up over a steep hill, where others escorted them out of the warzone.
The nine Russian soldiers were later filmed huddled together and covered in blankets inside a building being occupied by the Ukrainian soldiers.
The SSO noted that some of the Russians who surrendered were injured and needed medical attention after waiting days to finally surrender.
“Ukrainian special forces provided first aid to the enemies and began their evacuation,” the SSO said in a statement.
The Ukrainian special forces units have not been so forgiving in the past, with the unit previously touting the elimination of an entire Russian platoon and weapon’s cache elsewhere in Donetsk two weeks ago.
The region continues to see some of the most intense battles of the war as Russia continues to gain ground in Donetsk after more than three years of fighting.
Donetsk Oblast Governor Vadym Filashkin declared a day of mourning over the weekend following a Russian strike in the city of Dobropilla, with at least 14 people killed and another 37 injured after eight apartment buildings collapsed.
“It was one of the most brutal strikes,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Saturday. “The strike was deliberately calculated to cause maximum damage.”
