Hong Kong exam authorities have filed a police report after finding about 20 cases of people using fake Diploma of Secondary Education (DSE) credentials to apply to a university in Macau, a minister has said.
Secretary for Education Christine Choi Yuk-lin warned that if other cases of fake academic credentials linked to Hong Kong’s university entrance exam came to light, police would be notified and the students involved could have their degrees revoked.
“Using a fake document is a serious crime, which can result in the maximum penalty of a 14-year jail sentence,” she told a radio programme on Saturday.
Choi said the Macau University of Science and Technology contacted authorities in Hong Kong after receiving applications from about 20 students holding suspicious DSE certificates.
“Upon their suspicion, they sought verification from the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority (HKEAA),” she said.
The minister said the organisation had found that all of the DSE certificates in the cases were fake, describing the findings as “outrageous”.
