The Pentagon’s decision to place five more Chinese companies, including tech giant Tencent, on a list of firms that it says help the Chinese military is “overstretching the concept of national security”, China has said, while urging Washington to “immediately correct its wrongdoings”.

China stands firmly against “the US practice of overstretching the concept of national security, making discriminatory lists in various names, and going after Chinese companies to contain China’s high-quality development”, foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakunat said on Tuesday.

“The Chinese people’s rights to development are not to be deprived of or ignored,” he said.

“We urge the US to immediately correct its wrongdoings and end the illegal unilateral sanctions and its long-arm jurisdiction on Chinese companies. China will take all measures necessary to firmly defend the lawful rights and interests of Chinese companies and uphold its legitimate rights to development.”

The remarks came a day after the US Department of Defence added Chinese tech giants, including gaming and social media giant Tencent and CATL, the world’s biggest battery maker, to a list of firms it alleges work with the Chinese military and threaten US security.

The other additions are chipmaker ChangXin Memory Technologies, Quectel Wireless and drone-maker Autel Robotics, according to a document on the Federal Register to be published on Tuesday, US time.
