U.S. producer inflation posted its sharpest monthly increase since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in March 2022, new government data show.
September’s producer price index rose 1.3 percent, from an upwardly revised 0.5 percent in August, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
This came in well above the consensus forecast of 0.5 percent.
The index, a closely watched gauge of wholesale prices, tracks what businesses pay for goods and services before they reach store shelves. Because those costs often flow through to consumers, the index is generally viewed as an early signal of future inflation.
Producer inflation climbed to a higher-than-expected 6.3 percent, the highest since December 2022.
