Reform UK's Danny Kruger has declared that Britain is "absolutely broken" as he set out the party's plan to fix it.

Speaking to GB News presenter Miriam Cates at the Arc Conference in London, the head of Reform's Department for Preparing for Government argued that the country has "abandoned community".

Mr Kruger told GB News: "I think we've abandoned community. We've been so concerned with national GDP, we've forgotten about the things that matter to most people, which is what's their local neighbourhood.

"We need to think about family life. The decisions that we as politicians make influence decisions that people make in private, when to have kids, where to work, how to live. So I think the business of politics is of public concern."

Questioned on whether he believes that Britain is "broken", Mr Kruger agreed.

He said: "If by Britain we mean the institutions of the country, then it is absolutely broken.

"Of course, if you're talking about the British people, then very much not, and there is so much to be hopeful for about what we can do as a country."

He argued that Britain's "foundational institutions" have been "overlaid with a lot of very dangerous doctrine".

He said: "We do have underlying strengths, our foundational institutions, the rule of law, parliamentary democracy still remain.

"I think they've been overlaid with a lot of very dangerous doctrine and practice, which means that we don't have meaningful parliamentary sovereignty, the rule of law isn't good enough.

"Nevertheless, these things remain and we can build on them, so I have great hope for our country."

However, Mr Kruger stressed that we "cannot pretend that we're still a great country".

He told GB News: "If you ask people across the country, particularly in places far from London and even in parts of London, you will find people saying our society feels absolutely broken.

"You've got mass migration transforming our communities. You have genuine breakdown of well-being and families, young people are the neglect of the elderly, so much is really, really awry in our society."

The Reform MP declared Britain can be fixed with a leadership which boasts "courage and conviction".

He said: "However you cut it, Britain is in a very, very bad way. But as I say, beneath that, there is so much to be optimistic about, we just need leadership with courage, conviction and an absolutely clear plan for what to do."

Looking ahead to a possible general election, Mr Kruger concluded Reform UK "represents the change the public and the country needs".

He said: "I am very confident that if we play our cards right, and obviously a lot depends on us, we are in the business of demonstrating to the country that we have the plan and the people that justifies their support in Government.

"It's not enough just to be a great campaigner, Nigel knows this. He is building a team, putting together a plan for the changes that are needed. So I am confident that if we play our cards right in that regard, we will break through because fundamentally we haven't got time to muck around waiting for the Tories to recover.

"Andy Burnham is promising change, he's saying he's going to transform the country, well, let's see what he means by that."
