If someone is in your house without your permission, you call the cops. If your tenant stops paying rent, you evict them. If a foreigner is in a country without permission, the government should remove them. Yet across the Western world, that last one often doesn’t happen.
The Washington Post recently published a one-sided report that sides with illegal aliens over U.S. citizens. The attempt at bombshell reporting is called “How Trump turned a refugee bureau into a $410 million deportation operation.”
From Presidents Carter to Biden, the Post has endorsed the Democrat in every presidential election. As I explain in The Ten Woke Commandments (You Must Not Obey), the paper’s news coverage is relentlessly left-wing. They are generally sympathetic to migration, legal and illegal, and are firmly against anything the Trump administration is trying to do to secure our borders and enforce immigration law in the interior.
The Post is assisted in its reporting by a federal government career staff that overwhelmingly supports the Democrats. While many civil servants do their jobs regardless of their own personal beliefs, plenty of “Deep State” career employees are willing to leak documents, speak off the record, and otherwise cooperate with the left-wing national media.
Using internal documents given to them by insubordinate staff at the State Department’s Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration (PRM), the Post attempts to lay out a sympathetic case for a small number of illegal immigrants who have been deported to countries other than their land of birth.
The piece is harshly critical of the deals the State Department has made with third countries to accept aliens whom U.S. law (and public safety) require us to deport, but whose home countries refuse to take them. The Post is scandalized that the U.S. government is using money and other incentives to persuade foreign governments to take people who have no right to be here.
The Post’s sympathy is with aliens subject to alleged “inhumane” treatment in foreign countries. None is spared for their victims – and future victims if they are allowed to stay – in the U.S.
In most countries, a foreigner who enters illegally, arrives illegally and overstays their visa, or commits a crime that makes them unwelcome is ordered removed. They get their due process – which is usually a groundless asylum claim – but at the end of it, if they don’t qualify for protection they are ordered to leave. In the U.S., we call this a Final Order of Removal. In France, they call it an Obligation to Leave French Territory (OQTF).
In 2022 in France, 12-year-old Lola Daviet was murdered by Dahbia Benkired, an Algerian woman who had been given an OQTF earlier but was not deported.
In 2024, also in France, 19-year-old student Philippine Le Noir de Carlan was murdered in a Paris park by a Moroccan man, Taha Qualidat. He had been convicted of rape in 2019 and given an OQTF but was also not deported.
In 2024 in Germany, Syrian national Issa al Hasan stabbed and killed three people during a festival to celebrate the town of Solingen’s 650th anniversary. He had applied for asylum, but his claim was rejected a year earlier – yet he was not deported.
In 2012 in Britain, Pakistani citizen Shabir Ahmed was convicted in 2012 of 30 sexual offenses against girls as young as 12. Although sentenced to 22 years in prison, he was released after just 14. The British government tried to send him back to Pakistan, but they refused to take him. Nonetheless, Britain continues to give millions in aid and issues thousands of visas to Pakistanis.
In the United States, aliens (the legal term for non-citizens) can be here legally — i.e., with a visa or legal permanent residence — or illegally. If they are illegal, they can apply for asylum or other protection or sometimes adjust status through marriage or family relationship. But if all that “due process” fails, they will eventually be ordered deported, or “removed,” by an immigration judge. If no one carries out that order, Americans are forced to accept the risks of them committing crimes, or driving drunk or uninsured.
The Post clearly does not want aliens, even those with a Final Order of Removal, to be deported. But do they really think that the particularly dangerous aliens — recidivist violent robbers, rapists, and even murderers — should be kept here indefinitely just because they don’t want to leave, or because their home country doesn’t want them? These are not Americans. They are foreigners who present a clear and present danger to our lives and property.
The Democratic Socialists of America advocates the “abolition” of the existing U.S. criminal justice system, especially immigration detention. Does the Post really agree with that and accept the consequences?
The Post admits that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has deported only 25,000 people, out of nearly a million deported in total, to third countries, and of those, “about 20,000 have been sent to Mexico.” That means about 5,000 aliens were sent to third countries. They will likely all have criminal records. For U.S. state prisoners, 82% are re-arrested — an average of seven times — within 10 years of release after serving their sentence. The Post doesn’t seem to care that deporting convicted criminal aliens removes that risk from American streets.
Since detention is necessary, in cases where the alien is unwilling for the government to deport them, “abolition” means no control over our borders and no way to remove anyone who arrives legally but remains illegally. That means more preventable violent crime. The Post does a disservice to its readers by failing to admit there is a price to its alien-first ideology.
