PETALING JAYA - A private e-hailing driver and her car plunged into Mines Lake in Malaysia on Nov 16 after she claimed to not have noticed the lake.
A grainy TikTok video of the incident, which has since gone viral, shows the car submerged in the water and a woman screaming for help.
The video also showed a boat with several security workers aboard heading towards the vehicle.
The TikTok video by social media user Kak Diamond Channel was viewed by 30,000 viewers and liked by nearly 10,000 users. The TikTok user appeared to be at The Mines shopping mall, which overlooks Mines Lake, when recording the video.
The Mines in Seri Kembangan, Selangor is just south of Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur.
Serdang District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Anbalagan Arumugam said the incident involving the 49-year-old e-hailing driver happened at about 3.30pm.
“This accident happened when the woman was driving to pick up passengers at Astetica Residence (in Seri Kembangan) where it was raining heavily at the time,” he said.
The driver claimed she did not notice the lake because of the heavy rain and stagnant water, the police said.
She managed to escape through her car’s window without injuries, but not her Toyota Vios sedan sank at the spot. The car was later retrieved from the lake.
Several netizens questioned the absence of a barricade near the lake, which could have prevented the unfortunate incident. THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK
