Tanks already have tracks, armor, and giant cannons, but one indie developer has decided they also need martial arts training for some reason.
Indie games can get pretty wild sometimes. We’ve seen a co-op fishing game where players shoot fish, gamble their catch, and fight seagulls, a bus simulator that lets conductors fight troublesome passengers, and even an adventure where players experience life as a pet hamster.
However, Tank Fu might be one of the strangest combinations yet. Developed by Knight Owl Games, the experimental character action title takes the stylish combat of a hack-and-slash game and gives it to a tank.
Instead of slowly rolling around and firing shells from a distance, players can launch their tank into the air, throw punches, string together combos, and finish enemies with dramatic cinematic attacks… because why not.
Tank Fu turns armored warfare into Devil May Cry
According to its Steam page, Tank Fu is an “experimental over-the-top character action fighting game” where players must master a tank’s complete moveset to achieve the highest possible score.
Each tank has more than 16 moves to learn, with both ground and aerial combos available, and players can dash toward enemies, fly through the arena, punch rival tanks, and trigger cinematic finishers after beating them into submission.
Interestingly, Tank Fu is inspired by stylish action games such as Bayonetta, Devil May Cry, and Hi-Fi Rush. Essentially, it’s the type of combat usually reserved for superpowered heroes and demon hunters, only this time it is being performed by several tons of armored machinery.
The current pre-alpha build includes a four-arena tutorial that teaches most of the available moves. It also features a five-minute arena mode with endless enemies, where players can chase high scores and compete on the leaderboard.
No release date has been announced for Tank Fu just yet. However, players can currently request access to its pre-alpha playtest through Steam, with the developer warning that every aspect of the game remains open to change.
