Xbox is introducing a new Disc to Digital feature that will allow players to claim digital entitlements for supported physical games they already own.
The feature is designed to help players carry their existing Xbox libraries across more devices, including collections built across multiple generations of Xbox hardware. Testing will begin for Xbox Insiders on August 31 before a wider rollout.
Microsoft says the feature is also part of its broader game preservation efforts as the Xbox ecosystem continues to expand beyond traditional consoles.
How Xbox Disc to Digital works
Most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games will support Disc to Digital. To claim the digital entitlement, players need to insert a supported physical disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console and launch the game.
Once claimed, the entitlement provides access to digital features available for that title, including Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming where supported.
The original physical copy isn’t converted or disabled in the process. Microsoft says the disc will continue to function normally after its digital entitlement has been claimed.
Xbox says thousands of games will support Disc to Digital when testing begins, although not every physical title will be eligible. More games are expected to be added over time.
The feature could be particularly significant for players with large physical libraries as Xbox continues to make games accessible across consoles, PCs, handhelds, and cloud-supported devices.
The Disc to Digital announcement comes as Xbox also celebrates its 25th anniversary with new hardware.
The company has revealed the limited-edition Xbox Series X25 console alongside a wider collection of anniversary accessories, featuring translucent designs inspired by the original Xbox.
