157-Degree Turf Temperature In Eagles-Titans Game Melts Cleats, Forces Philadelphia’s Nick Sirianni To Get IV

Sunday’s game between the Philadelphia Eagles and Tennessee Titans was a good one, with the Birds ultimately pulling off the 24-20 victory. It was absolutely lit, as the kids say, and in more ways than one.

During the game at Nissan Stadium, which is in Nashville, it was incredibly hot — and I mean hot. The heat was so intense that players’ cleats were melting, and Philly head coach Nick Sirianni needed an IV. According to the television broadcast, per ESPN, the turf temperature hit a peak of 157 degrees Fahrenheit.

Cam Jurgens, an offensive lineman for the Eagles, said after the game that he went through numerous pairs of cleats because they kept melting.

At noon local time, when kickoff was scheduled, the temperature in Nashville was 95 degrees, with the heat index at approximately 105. A heat dome has gripped the region over the last few weeks, as atmospheric pressure forces heat down and locks it in place.

When the elements of weather and football collide, it’s straight-up aura.

The sport was born in the dirt, the rain, the sub-zero chill with a foot of snow, and as you saw in Nashville, the suffocating heat. This is why I’m not the biggest fan of domes and retractable roofs; they strip away the soul of the gridiron.

When the turf is practically glowing and your shoes are liquefying, game plans go out the window. Scheme takes a backseat to unadulterated will. This is a large part of the reason why Titans-Eagles was so entertaining.

I personally had the time of my life watching the game on RedZone, and you really have to soak in how special it was, because it felt like an iconic chapter out of NFL Films.
