Sonic the Hedgehog is getting an ultra-rare collectible made with 400-year-old Japanese craftsmanship techniques dating back to the samurai era.
To celebrate Sonic’s 35th anniversary, Sega has teamed up with a Japanese porcelain brand to release 50 figures of Sega’s legendary mascot.
The limited-edition launch has also been crafted using traditional techniques associated with Arita ware, a traditional Japanese porcelain craft originating in Saga Prefecture.
It’s a pretty unique way to celebrate Sonic’s birthday, but you’ll need to be prepared to spend a few thousand dollars if you wish to add him to your collection.
Sonic gets ultra-rare porcelain figure for 35th anniversary
Priced at $7,000 (excluding taxes), the Sonic the Hedgehog Arita Ware “Infinite Blue” depicts the lightning-fast character mid-run. His signature look has been faithfully recreated using Arita porcelain, while the finishing touches use hand-painted techniques to bring his blistering speed to life.
According to the translated press release, Sonic’s blue coloring comes from gosu, which is a traditional ceramic pigment that’s applied beneath the glaze. Interlocking wave patterns have then been applied to the porcelain figure’s face, while its body has diamond shapes that the creators say represent the Blue Blur’s “limitless energy, endless adventure, and his determination to move forward.”
YOYOYO says development took approximately eight months, where craftsman continuously refined the digital models, molds, and firing tests needed to achieve the sculpture’s final look.
As for Sonic himself, he stands at 8.4 inches high, 6.1 inches wide, 9 inches deep, and ships with a certificate, base, and a wooden box to keep him safe.
For fans overseas, online purchase lottery applications open on October 9 and close on October 18, with one entry permitted per person. Five pieces will also be offered on a first-come, first-served basis at the Sonic the Exhibition: Across Generations, which runs at Tokyo’s Ikebukuro Parco from October 9 to November 1.
Interestingly, Sonic isn’t the only beloved character that has received a traditionally inspired porcelain collab. Back in February, the popular anime and manga series Ghost in the Shell released a handcrafted porcelain Tachikoma.
