Activision believes the launch of Grand Theft Auto 6 will actually help Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 as they’re releasing close together.

Over the last few years, a number of game developers and publishers have moved their games away from the same release window as Grand Theft Auto 6. Some have admitted that their games would simply be swallowed up by Rockstar Games’ long-awaited game, and want to give themselves a chance at succeeding.

One game that is going somewhat head-to-head with the new GTA is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. The new CoD, which focuses on a futuristic war in Korea, is releasing on October 23 – just under a month before GTA 6.

While there have been some fears that players will totally abandon the new CoD once Grand Theft Auto drops, Activision isn’t too worried.

GTA 6 will help Modern Warfare 4 at launch

“Well, no offense to Zelda, but [GTA and COD] are the two biggest games of the year. And more people coming in to the dashboards, more people taking the dust off their Xbox or PlayStation and playing again, is going to be more eyeballs for us overall,” Activision’s Chief Marketing Officer, Tyler Bahl, told The Games Business.

“And at the end of the day, what makes Call of Duty last the test of time is the community and social experience. When we look at our research and say, ‘what is the most exciting things about our games? Is it the gunplay?’ It’s actually spending time with friends. And so, we stand on our own [in that regard].

“If more people are talking about games, if there’s more press around it, that’s going to be good for everybody, not just us.”

Additionally, Bahl revealed that the next Call of Duty game will be for a new “sub-franchise” and not Modern Warfare or Black Ops.

The CMO also admitted that Black Ops 7 fell short of what players were expecting, saying they heard the feedback “loud and clear.”
