Benton McClintock, 27, had been running away from his credit card bill for nearly a decade before deciding to pay it off. When McClintock was in college, he began paying for big trips to Milan, Paris, and other getaways with his credit card, and—until his balance had ballooned to $40,000—thought nothing of it.

Mine is paid off and cancelled. I now use a card I share with my wife and she manages it. We get really good points back, real cash, no b.s. It works for us and we pay it the balance off every month despite the fact that I’m currently unemployed and on unemployment insurance payments.

Why does a guy named “Benton” who goes to Paris and Milan, and appears to be irresponsible, set my Gaydar off?

My main credit card, which I use to pay for stuff instead of carrying cash, is set at $500 and is paid off every two weeks.

Not really a big problem. You pay off one credit card with another. it is important to keep the rotation accurate. Keep filling out credit card applications (but leave out some of your cc debt so they don’t get suspicious). After a while you may only get high interest cc apps which means somebody’s been snooping into your credit score. Then go on one final blowout vacation and shoot the works. Right before declaring bankruptcy.

Thanks! I think I’ll try that. But wouldn’t it be more financially responsible to use the credit cards to purchase resalable consumer items that you could convert to cash after the smoke clears?

Ignorance concerning finances is not bliss. Deferred gratification & living below your means -- helps avoid becoming a slave to debt.

I wouldn’t focus on the consumer items that will increase in value over time, like collectables, if I were you.

You were fine until you got to that. That debt might not be discharged in bankruptcy. 11 U.S.C. § 523(a)(2). Consult a bankruptcy attorney before trying that.

I've got the job for him, but he'll have to get rid of that whole "deciding to pay it off" idea.

But that would be asking for permission, when I’d rather apologize.
