(LifeSiteNews) — A new report has revealed that 25 percent of people euthanized in Belgium in 2025 were not deemed “terminally ill,” demonstrating the normalization of the deadly practice in the European country.

The report by the Federal Commission for the Control and Evaluation showed that 1,117 euthanasia deaths in 2025, accounting for 24.9 percent of all registered euthanasia cases, were carried out on individuals whose death wasn’t “expected in the short term” and who had “incurable” conditions, including common ailments in the elderly.

Some of those who allegedly requested to die did so due to psychiatric or cognitive conditions like dementia, while others had “chronic” conditions. While most people killed by euthanasia were elderly, one who died by assisted suicide in 2025 was a teenager.

According to the government report, the responsible commission approved 85.6 percent of cases at the first hearing without requesting further information about the patient. This was up from the previous year, when the commission approved 80 percent of cases without asking any questions. While the other cases required additional information or clarification from a doctor, all requests were ultimately granted, and every person who requested euthanasia was killed.

As LifeSiteNews reported previously, a record number of 4,486 people were killed via assisted suicide in Belgium in 2025, representing a 12.4 percent increase from the previous year and four percent of the total deaths in the country.

Since legalization in 2002, over 42,000 people in Belgium have died by assisted suicide. In the first full year of legalized euthanasia (2003), 235 people were killed by assisted suicide. That number has steadily risen every year since the introduction of the law.

The Belgian law does not require those seeking “assisted dying” to be near the end of their lives. Since 2014, age restrictions have been removed, allowing minors “with capacity of discernment” to legally end their lives as well.
