A watchdog group’s expose has turned into a very budding problem for the Biden Administration’s legacy, as it has been revealed that nearly all of his executive orders were signed not by him, but rather by an autopen that mimics his signature. That revelation has raised yet more questions about who was running things during the Biden Presidency.
As background, the autopen is an electromechanical pen that precisely replicates a signature, and is often used by high-ranking officials to sign documents when they have a great many mundane things to sign, as it is far faster and easier to use than it is to actually sign documents, and can be done by aides.
However, as the autopen does not require the direct involvement of the person whose signature is to be replicated, it is questioned whether the autopen is legally recognized when signing critical documents, though it is treated as legally valid in the cases of the mundane documents for which it is typically used.
In any case, according to a jaw-dropping report from the Oversight Project, which is a branch of the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank, nearly every document that was ostensibly signed by President Joe Biden, with the exception of the letter in which he announced his withdrawal from the presidential race in 2024, was signed by the autopen. That has led to concerns, including from the Oversight Project, over who was directing the actions of the Biden presidency.
The Oversight Project, in its bombshell post on X (formerly Twitter), said, “🚨WHOEVER CONTROLLED THE AUTOPEN CONTROLLED THE PRESIDENCY🚨 We gathered every document we could find with Biden’s signature over the course of his presidency. All used the same autopen signature except for the the announcement that the former President was dropping out of the race last year. Here is the autopen signature.”
It then posted the below two pictures, with the first two signatures allegedly being autopen signatures of President Biden’s signature, one from mid-2022 and the other from late 2024, and both of them entirely identical, and the third signature, located in the second picture, being his far different signature, which was used for the letter in which he dropped out of the presidential race. Here are those two signatures, both of which come from The Oversight Project’s post:

Following up on that in a second post, the Oversight Project said, “Recall that former President Biden admitted to @SpeakerJohnson that he did not remember signing an executive order pausing LNG exports. So, who signed it? For investigators to determine whether then-President Biden actually ordered the signature of relevant legal documents, or if he even had the mental capacity to, they must first determine who controlled the autopen and what checks there were in place.”
The group then noted that there are serious legal questions over the validity of documents signed by the pen, saying, “For investigators to determine whether then-President Biden actually ordered the signature of relevant legal documents, or if he even had the mental capacity to, they must first determine who controlled the autopen and what checks there were in place. Given President Biden’s decision to revoke Executive Privilege for individuals advising Trump during his first Presidency, this is a knowable fact that can be determined with the correct legal process?”
In another follow-up post noting that there are serious questions over if Biden even knew what was being signed in his name, the group said, “🚨Biden Autopen Pardons on VACATION?🚨 Who is behind this autopen on 12/30/2022 that pardoned six criminals (with the exact same autopen signature) while Joe Biden was vacationing and golfing in the U.S. Virgin Islands? Note they all say they are “Signed in the City of Washington” Our autopen investigation continues…”
