The index spent the morning falling and the afternoon recovering. What changed was not the fiscal arithmetic but how traders chose to read it.

The Ibovespa closed Thursday at 185,992 points, up 0.24%, after dropping more than one percent during the session. Turnover reached R$18.6 billion, and the dollar ended at R$5.139 on B3, down 0.24%.
A Morning of Fear, an Afternoon of Arithmetic
The selling began when the government published a 15% rise in the Bolsa Família floor in an extra edition of the official gazette. The minimum payment goes from R$600 to R$691 from 1 October, seventeen days before the first round of voting.
The index fell more than one percent on the news. By the close it had turned positive, because traders decided the political read mattered more than the fiscal one.
The programme reaches 19.3 million families and costs R$5.8 billion this year. From 2027 the annual bill runs at R$22.7 billion.
Who Moved and Why
Yduqs led the index with a 3.07% gain, ahead of Santander Brasil at 2.52% and Vale at 2.07%. Vale tracked a firm iron ore market and a broad rebound in mining shares in New York.
At the other end, CSN Mineração fell 5.59%, the worst performance in the index. Cury lost 5.15% and Marcopolo dropped 5.08% after a broker downgrade.
Petrobras, Itaú and Banco do Brasil barely moved, each within a third of a percentage point. The session was decided at the edges rather than in the heavyweights.

The Currency Read
The dollar closed at R$5.139 on B3, a fall of 0.24% that left the real slightly stronger. That happened on a week when the Copom cut the Selic to 13.75% and the Federal Reserve raised its range to 3.75% to 4.00%.
A narrower gap between the two policy rates usually pressures the real rather than helping it. The currency held because foreign flows into Brazilian equities have stayed firm through September.
Bradesco’s Short Measure
Bradesco raised R$6.541 billion in the first phase of a capital increase of up to R$10 billion. The bank had set a floor of R$8 billion for that stage, and the shortfall sent the remaining shares to a further distribution.
Its preferred shares were the most heavily traded name on B3 that day. The Supreme Federal Court’s investigation into Banco Master added a second live question to Brazilian bank risk.
The Regional Picture
Mexico’s IPC rose 0.58% to 63,873 points as the exchange reopened after Independence Day. Argentina’s Merval gained 1.08% and Chile’s IPSA rose 1.30% in a session cut short for Fiestas Patrias.
Colombia’s COLCAP added 0.40%, but the peso fell 1.09% against the dollar. That was the sharpest currency move in the region on the day.
What to Watch
The Getúlio Vargas Foundation publishes the second September preview of the IGP-M index at 08:00 on Friday. It is the only significant Brazilian release of the day.
Chile’s exchange is closed for Fiestas Patrias, which thins regional turnover. The first round of Brazil’s election falls on 4 October, and every fiscal announcement between now and then will be read through that lens.
