Great Britain received intelligence from Israel on an Iranian-sponsored terror plot, according to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, then almost immediately turned on the Jewish state with a sweeping set of hostile sanctions.
The jaw-dropping double-cross was revealed when Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told Fox News host Sean Hannity on Wednesday that Israeli spy agencies had reportedly handed the United Kingdom critical intel uncovering an Iranian-backed terror plot on British soil.
“You want to hear how absurd things are there and how far the anti-Israel propaganda has gone?” Netanyahu told Hannity. “We gave the Brits the intel that there was going to be an attack and it’s an Iranian-sponsored attack. Pretty much the next day they slapped sanctions on us.”
The explosive tip-off came before counterterrorism cops in western England seized five suspects near Royal Air Force base Fairford, where American B-1 bombers operate. The suspects were intercepted in three vans, one of which was carrying quantities of gas. U.K. Prime Minister Andy Burnham conceded there were “strong indications” Tehran was behind the threat to the joint U.S.-U.K. military facility. It’s unclear if the Israeli intelligence was on the suspects near the Royal Air Force Base Fairford.
Yet, Downing Street offered no public gratitude after Israel shared the intelligence. Instead, Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband took the stage at the Labour Party Conference in Liverpool to throw Israel under the bus.
Catering to anti-Israel activists, Miliband delivered a scathing speech declaring to pro-Palestinian campaigners: “We hear you. You were right.” He previously blasted Israel’s defensive operations in Gaza as a “stain on the conscience of the world” and accused Jerusalem of “war crimes” and “ethnic cleansing.”
Miliband slapped Israel with a series of hostile economic actions earlier in September. He announced U.K. bans on imports from Israeli settlements in Judea and Samaria, cutting off British financial and construction supply lines, and outlawing property advertisements linked to the West Bank.
For Middle East historians, London’s double-cross of its supposed Middle Eastern ally is just the latest chapter in a century-long saga of British backstabbing.
Ever since the 1917 Balfour Declaration promised a Jewish homeland, Britain has repeatedly sold out Jewish aspirations to appease hostile regional actors. Shortly after promising a national home, the British Empire sliced off 78% of the Palestine Mandate to construct Transjordan — creating what remains a majority-Palestinian Arab state today.
As World War II loomed, London issued the infamous 1939 White Paper, effectively slamming the doors of what was called Palestine on millions of Jews trying to escape Nazi gas chambers. That cold-hearted policy led to disasters like the 1942 sinking of the Struma, which killed nearly 800 Jewish refugees who were turned away by British authorities.
When the United Nations voted to partition the land in 1947, Britain abstained. During the 1948 War of Independence, British officers even commanded Jordan’s Arab Legion as it waged war against the Jewish state. London refused to even recognize Israel until 1950.
Now, with British politicians weaponizing false “genocide” smears and imposing trade restrictions, while leaning on Israeli intelligence to protect their own troops, Downing Street keeps proving that its habit of betraying Jerusalem is alive and well.
