President Trump stands with the American people— no lawmaker, regardless of party or seniority, should utilize insider information for personal profit. In his State of the Union Address to Congress earlier this year, President Trump called for the passage of the Stop Insider Trading Act without delay to ensure that Members of Congress cannot profit from insider information.
“As we ensure that all Americans can profit from a rising stock market, let’s also ensure that members of Congress cannot corruptly profit using inside information… Did Nancy Pelosi stand up? Doubt it. Pass the Stop Insider Trading Act without delay.” – President Trump, State of the Union Address
Yet, today EVERY SENATE DEMOCRAT BLOCKED this legislation to root out corruption in Washington and ban Members of Congress, their spouses, and their dependent children from purchasing individual stocks from publicly traded companies. Members of Congress shouldn’t be buying individual stocks while writing laws and making decisions that directly move financial markets. This is commonsense.
Republicans and President Trump are UNITED behind the Stop Insider Trading Act – critical legislation that would deliver the most significant change to stock trading rules in over a decade after President Obama’s STOCK Act failed to hold members accountable. Look no further than Nancy Pelosi as proof that a stock trading ban is necessary to stop corruption at the highest levels and restore the public’s trust.
When lawmakers consistently outperform stock trading benchmarks, Americans are rightly asking questions and demanding transparency. Democrats are now on the record opposing this commonsense legislation that nearly 90% of Americans support.
In July, House Democrats voted almost unanimously against advancing this legislation.
This legislation also included a commonsense provision that would require voters to provide a photo ID to vote to ensure that only American citizens vote in American elections— a measure that is vastly supported by the American people.
