EXCLUSIVE: Turner Vows HUD Will Get ‘Out Of The Way’ Of Homebuilders, Cut Red Tape At ‘Made In America’ Showcase

Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Scott Turner is expected to vow deregulation and innovation for homebuilders at the agency’s sixth Annual Innovative Housing Showcase, according to remarks obtained by the Daily Caller.

The Housing Showcase, taking place on the National Mall and part of the nation’s America 250 celebration, gathers innovators, builders, policymakers, and industry experts to discuss new technologies and solutions to the nation’s housing needs, an administration official told the Caller. Turner is expected to speak at the opening ceremony to kick off the showcase, where he will argue innovation in homeownership will keep America going for another 250 years.

“Innovation in homeownership has defined America for 250 years, and beyond. Owning a home is a key part of the American dream. And American innovation has helped those homes get better and better with each passing year,” Turner will say, according to purported remarks.

“When the Pilgrims first reached these shores, they lived in small, dark homes that barely kept out the winter cold. Centuries later, we now have smart homes that let you control the AC with the sound of your voice. This future was only possible because of generations of American innovators who paved that path,” he will add.

The HUD Secretary will also pledge deregulation to “empower builders” and push new homeowner opportunities for Americans.

“We recognize that the private sector is the real engine of innovation, and we want to empower builders by getting out of their way instead of blocking them at every turn with red tape and mandates,” Turner is expected to say.

“By cutting red tape, we are creating a more predictable and stable future for innovators to flourish. We want to encourage the drive, ambition, and bold spirit that have pushed through complacency and the status quo throughout our history,” he will add.

America is facing a housing crisis. According to a recent report by government spending watchdog OpenTheBooks.com, HUD spending has had no impact on lowering house prices.

The report examines the “affordability gap” the disparity between the change in house prices and the change in household income. (RELATED: First-Time Homebuyers Are Older Than Ever As Affordability Crisis Takes Toll)

The average affordability gap across all 50 states was 42.67 percent, and the seven battleground states in the 2024 presidential election averaged 54.77 percent.

“We’ve uncovered nearly $495 million in fraud, rolled back burdensome Biden-era policies, and helped more than one million Americans achieve homeownership,” a HUD spokesperson told the Daily Caller News Foundation about the report.

“Washington doesn’t have all the answers, which is why we’re empowering state and local leaders to advance proven solutions, cut barriers, and increase housing supply,” the spokesperson continued.

Turner will tout HUD progress to address the crisis and economy in his opening remarks, and is expected to state that there has been an increase of almost 100,000 factory construction jobs since Jan. 2025.

“We now live in homes that the Pilgrims could not have imagined in their wildest dreams, and it is exciting to imagine what homes Americans will live in 250 years from now. HUD is hosting this showcase to give you a small glimpse into that future,” Turner will say.
