American farmers are waging a war against Big Fertilizer companies but want the Trump administration to pick up a legal battle sword and launch a new offensive using antitrust law.

In March, the Department of Justice Antitrust Division launched a formal investigation into Big Fertilizer companies, probing whether firms colluded and engaged in illegal price fixing. For farmers who believe fertilizer monopolies are the main culprits behind steadily rising fertilizer prices, it was a crucial step toward breaking what has become known as the “fertilizer cartel,” a group that includes Mosaic, Nutrien, CF Industries, Koch Agronomic Services and Yara International.
