At the start of August I received a phone call from our Head of Programming, Ben Briscoe.
“Tom, can you get to Washington in 48 hours?”
And so before I knew it, I was on a plane and ready to cover a couple of weeks of the Late Show Live.
GB News wanted more show covers to be done from our Washington studio and I was delighted to jump at the chance.
Little did I know then two months later, I’d be back for rather more than a couple of weeks.
Now I’ve got just a few more days in Blighty before I trade Paddington and Westminster for the wacky and wonderful world of Washington DC.
I first visited the American capital with my family a few months before the 2008 presidential election.
As we posed in front of the gates of the White House at that time, still occupied by George W. Bush, I couldn’t have imagined working behind those same gates years down the line.

Well, now I can’t quite believe that 18 years later, I’m moving to Washington to become US Political Editor of GB News.
I will be reporting from the West Wing almost every day, and hosting the Late Show Live from our shiny studio just a few blocks down the road four nights a week.
Washington DC has always played an outsized role in my life; I’ve been back and forth once or twice a year since graduating from university.
I’ve even had a US Social Security number since a three-month internship out there back in 2017.
It is simply a huge honour and privilege to be promoted to the role of GB News US Political Editor

And now it is simply a huge honour and privilege to be promoted to the role of GB News US Political Editor at such a pivotal time for this country, the United States, and the world.
When America sneezes, the world catches a cold.
Now, more than ever, on matters of peace, prosperity, and technological progress, an understanding of how Washington is thinking is to get a head start on British politics and policy down the line too.
It’s pertinent for me that on the day my new job was announced, the Zuckerbergs and Elon Musks of the world were there at the White House signing a memorandum on artificial intelligence.
The decisions taken in that building are going to have such an outsized effect on all our lives, especially over the next twelve months.
I'm delighted to be moving to DC in time for the midterm elections too, so much that matters for the whole world could be decided across an ocean in a matter of weeks.
From beefing up our weekday daytime coverage from Washington, to hosting the Late Show Live, I can't wait to get stuck in.
It will be brilliant to work alongside the inimitable Ben Leo, whose reporting across the United States has set the bar for some truly unmissable television over the last twelve months.
I also want to say a huge thank you to my friend Bev Turner for her incredible work over the last year, in particular securing two landmark interviews with the President of the United States.
