Jamie Carragher has provided a health update after being forced to leave CBS's Champions League coverage early on Wednesday night due to illness.

The Liverpool legend was absent from the half-time show onwards, prompting concern from viewers.

Fellow panellists Thierry Henry and Micah Richards questioned his whereabouts when the half-time analysis began.

Host Kate Scott explained to them and the audience that Carragher had fallen ill, leading to worry among fans about the former England defender's condition.

Carragher's unexpected departure left Henry, Richards and Scott to cover the remaining proceedings without him.

The unspecified illness was serious enough for the former defender to cut his duties short midway through the broadcast.

There was no visible indication that Carragher was unwell during the early part of the show, where he had been in good spirits.

He had appeared on CBS's coverage after Tuesday's match before returning to his regular panel role on Wednesday.

The pundit was in animated spirits during Tuesday's broadcast following his former club's European disappointment.

Wednesday's Champions League fixtures included Arsenal versus PSV, Aston Villa against Club Brugge, and a Madrid derby.

Scott had earlier poked fun at Carragher when introducing him at the start of Wednesday's show.

"Hello, welcome to our London studios. I am Kate Scott and I am once again joined by Thierry Henry and Micah Richards," she began.

She continued with a humorous comparison: "Tonight, just like the story of the prodigal son. A bit too big for his boots, he thought life would be sweeter on the road.

"He came home, humbled. Hoping that he would be accepted. Jamie Carragher, back in the chair."
