Outgoing Democratic Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett honored rapper Chris Brown, who pleaded guilty to a felony assault charge involving then-girlfriend Rihanna, with congressional recognition at his concert Saturday.
Crockett made an appearance at Brown and Usher’s concert in Arlington, Texas, over the weekend, presenting the two artists with a Congressional Record tribute Saturday night. Crockett’s decision to honor Brown in particular sparked controversy due to his past convictions of violent crimes. (RELATED: Jasmine Crockett Claims America Owes Black Women ‘Everything’)
“Right now, we are experiencing black joy to the highest level,” Crockett said during the concert. “And I wanted to make sure we wanted to document that in the Congressional record.”
Most notably, Brown was convicted after pleading guilty to one count of felony assault in 2009 after he beat his then-girlfriend Rihanna. He was sentenced to just five years of probation and 180 days of community labor, one year of domestic violence counseling, and a restraining order.
He served no jail time for the abuse.

Brown has faced a string of charges for violent crimes over the years. In 2013, Brown was arrested on another felony assault charge after he allegedly punched a man outside his hotel in Washington, D.C. The charge was later reduced to misdemeanor simple assault and he pleaded guilty in 2014.
A few years later in 2016, Brown was arrested on the charge of assault with a deadly weapon after model Baylee Curran alleged he pointed a gun at her. He was released on $250,000 bail but was never convicted.
Brown was also arrested in 2025 over a 2023 altercation where he was alleged to have attacked music producer Abraham Diaw. He was initially charged with grievous bodily harm with intent as well as charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon.
In July 2026, Brown pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of affray and is scheduled to be sentenced in October.
