CV NEWS FEED // Country singer Lee Greenwood endorsed and thanked former President Donald Trump, saying, “Little did I know 40 years ago that my song would play a key part of such a historic presidential campaign.”
In a post to his X account, Greenwood added, “I am proud to have voted Donald J. Trump as the 47th President of the United States.”
Trump has been using “Proud to be an American” to walk out at each of his rallies and many of his events since 2016, Greenwood noted.
He also posted an emotional video of the modern patriotic anthem with footage of Trump before his political career all the way up to his current campaign.
Greenwood, who has won five Grammys, explained on his website the significance of the song.
“USA is the song I always felt the need to write. I wanted to have something that would unite Americans from coast to coast and to instill pride back in the United States,” he noted. “The song represents my family, my community and those men and women who have paid the price for the freedoms we all love and enjoy.”
The patriotic anthem topped country music charts in 1991, 2001 (after the 9/11 terrorist attacks), and 2003. It is used in military and patriotic events across the country and in the film shown during naturalization ceremonies, where immigrants are sworn in as U.S. citizens.
Greenwood has served in federal capacities for both Democratic and Republican presidents, starting when President George W. Bush appointed him to serve on the National Endowment of the Arts Council. Greenwood held the post through Barack Obama, Donald Trump, and one year of Joe Biden’s presidencies.
Biden appointed Greenwood to the Kennedy Center Board of Trustees, where he currently serves.
