Major TV networks are boycotting the White House press pool after President Donald Trump banned several outlets from the White House grounds.
Trump banned CNN, Politico and MSNow from the White House campus on Friday, citing their “FICTION and LIES” about the administration. With the outlets locked out of the White House, Fox News, ABC, CBS and NBC all agreed to boycott their spot in the press pool. The White House press pool is a small group of rotating reporters who cover the president’s events and remarks each day. The reporters on the pool are tasked with syndicating the president’s comments and answers to questions to the rest of the reporters in the room. TV pool networks share their feed with the outlets not in the room.
CNN, Politico, and MSNow have since teamed together to sue the Trump administration over access to the White House.
“Media Outlets shouldn’t be able to constantly write or report FICTION and LIES when they’re covering the President of the United States, the Trump Administration, or the United States of America. Other Fake News Media Outlets to follow,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, announcing the initial ban.
Under the Biden administration, conservative reporters were isolated and access to the president was restricted. In one instance, specific outlets — including the Daily Caller, New York Post and Fox News Radio — were hauled out of Biden’s remarks after the White House decided the event would be open to select media. The New York Post’s Steven Nelson refused to leave the room after pointing out there was enough space for everyone.
New rules were also unveiled by the Biden administration regarding which journalists were allowed in the briefing room and at presidential events. During the Biden years, reporters who interrupted and were deemed “unprofessional” were often scolded by their colleagues.
And when the Biden administration revoked the press credentials of 442 reporters, the White House Correspondents Association took an “officially noncommittal stance,” the Washington Post reported.
“This is about more than the rights of journalists. It is about the right of the American people to receive a full and independent account of the activities, policies and decisions of whoever occupies the nation’s highest office,” now WHCA President Jacqui Heinrich wrote in a statement.
“The WHCA stands in defense of our colleagues at CNN, MSNOW, and POLITICO who are being singled out for doing their jobs,” she added.
