Former President Jimmy Carter's life was honored during a service at the National Cathedral in Washington, DC, on Thursday morning. President Joe Biden, who delivered the eulogy, shared that he was the first senator to endorse Jimmy Carter's candidacy for president in 1976, The Guardian reported.

"Based on what I believe is Jimmy Carter's enduring attribute: character, character, character," Biden said. "Character, I believe, is destiny. Destiny in our lives, and, quite frankly, destiny in the life of the nation. It's an accumulation of a million things built on character that leads to a good life in a decent country."

"Jimmy Carter's friendship taught me, and through his life, taught me, that strength of character is more than a title or the power we hold," he continued. "It's the strength to understand that everyone should be treated with dignity, respect, that everyone, and I mean everyone, deserves an even shot."

President-elect Trump was also in attendance at Carter's funeral along with former President Barack Obama, Georgia Bush, and Bill Clinton. Their wives, except for Michelle Obama, were also present.

In one clip, Trump and Obama appeared to have a friendly exchange as they sat next to each other.

Carter's grandsons, Joshua and Jason Carter, also provided their own eulogies, WBALTV reports.

"He built houses for people who needed homes," said Joshua Carter, who recalled how Carter regularly taught Sunday school in his native hamlet of Plains, Georgia, after leaving the White House."

"He eliminated diseases in forgotten places. He waged peace anywhere in the world, wherever he saw a chance. He loved people."

In Jason Carter's message, he paid tribute to his grandfather and his wife Rosalynn, who died in 2023.

"They were small-town people who never forgot who they were and where they were from no matter what happened in their lives," said Jason, who chairs the Carter Center, a global humanitarian operation founded by the former president after leaving office.

Meanwhile, Steven Ford and Ted Mondale, the sons of former President Gerald Ford and former Vice President Walter Mondale, delivered posthumous eulogies written by both men to Carter before they died.

Carter, who passed away on Dec. 29, 2024, at the age of 100, was taken to Georgia, where he will be buried alongside Rosalyn following a private family funeral.
