New York will literally do everything except arrest criminals and lawless hooligans evading subway fares.
Thirty-six hours after the city installed so-called “spikes” on subway turnstiles to thwart fare evaders, a New York Post photographer captured a photo of a man hopping through without much difficulty. “Oh, so now I gotta jump over it? Okay, I don’t give a fuck, I’ll jump over it,” the man said, according to the Post.
If you take a look at the metal sheets, the spikes are more like dull waves. In fact, they look like those Crayola safety scissors your 3rd-grade art teacher gives you to make your cuts decorative. New York City will bust out razor-sharp spikes on benches and windowsills to keep the pigeons at bay, but when it comes to lawless hooligans — they get the fun obstacle course that adds a little challenge to their law-breaking—a new level to the video game.
It’s not the latest supposed improvement the city has made that has backfired. Apparently, the new price congestion plan, aimed at alleviating traffic congestion on the island, has left the subways packed to the gills. What could go wrong in a subway brimming with commuters with potential criminals in the mix?
The end of December saw a gruesome subway murder in which an illegal immigrant lit an innocent woman on fire, and then fanned the flames until she was fully engulfed in flames. Hours after the incident, Democratic New York Gov. Kathy Hochul reassured New Yorkers that crime is going down and that the subways are safe.
How many subway riders actually believe her? How many more fare evaders will sow chaos and unease before cops just start arresting them? How many more times will people need to be set on fire or pushed into an oncoming train before a real crackdown on crime occurs?
Time will tell.
