Blizzard fixed a major oversight with Overwatch 2’s Mystery Heroes game mode and its interaction with the new Hero Perks mechanic and it’s made the mode way better.

Mystery Heroes is one of Overwatch’s most iconic game modes, allowing players to experiment with heroes they won’t normally play by giving each player a new hero every time they respawn. The game mode was so popular, it even had its own Competitive ladder for a while.

However, with the introduction of Hero Perks in Season 15, there was one major oversight in Mystery Heroes that disappointed fans, as Blizzard did not correctly account for Perks when you’re forced to swap heroes.

Because you swap heroes on death, there would be a major gap between players who managed to stay alive with full Perks and players who were forced to swap, creating a strong snowball effect. Fortunately, this was just a slight oversight, and Blizzard introduced an elegant solution that pleased the community.

Mystery Heroes now grants random Perks as well

Mystery Heroes became all the more mysterious now, as characters will additionally spawn with both Perks chosen at random. Arguably, this adds even more replayability, as players can now experiment with Perk combinations they’d never select.

“I was gonna say I’d prefer it if they just let us pick the [two] Perks at spawn instead,” one player said. “[But] it’s MYSTERY heroes. Mystery Perks just makes sense.”

This is a change that solves other gameplay grievances with Mystery Heroes after Hero Perks were introduced. Not only are snowballs mitigated with this change, but it’s also not fun to build up two Perks only to lose them with one minor misplay or an unlucky situation.

“Love this!” exclaimed one player. “I want my Mystery Heroes mode to be as random as possible, and this helps with exactly that. Being forced to make the best with whatever Perks they give you is just like having to do the best with whatever hero they gave you.

“It no longer feels bad dying and losing your Perks, which were hard to earn in this mode,” said another player. “Also, things were feeling too snowbally with earned Perks once a team got an advantage.”

It’s a prompt change that went appreciated by much of the community and bodes well for the future of player feedback and overall content updates. While you can’t pick your Perks in Mystery Heroes, it’s still worth knowing which Perks are the best for every situation, so check out the best Perks for each hero here.
