With the long-awaited hero bans feature coming soon, Overwatch 2 players are already planning which frustrating heroes they’re going to axe from matches.

The Season 16 update is set to be another huge update for Overwatch, with the new Stadium mode finally arriving and DPS hero Freja joining the roster. But it’s also bringing a feature that the community has wanted for a long time in the form of hero bans.

Following its success in Marvel Rivals, once the update is live, Competitive teams will be able to vote to ban one hero each, meaning that two will be unavailable in every match at higher ranks. But even though this system doesn’t drop until April, players are already plotting which characters they want to target.

Ever since the feature was announced, a number of posts have popped up highlighting which heroes should and will be banned. While every player has their own nemesis they want to remove, a few names have cropped up consistently; Zarya, Widowmaker, and Sombra.

All three of these characters often cause frustrations during matches, all for very different reasons. In the case of Zarya, the tank’s constant supply of shield bubbles gives her great survivability. Plus, shooting these barriers powers up her main weapon, making it tough to know when to attack and when to leave her be.

Widowmaker draws criticism due to her one-shot sniper, which can completely take out a backline with just a couple of well-placed headshots. In a hero shooter where losing just one of your four teammates can spell disaster, it’s been argued that one character being able to take another out so quickly ruins the flow of matches.

Meanwhile, Sombra has long been one of the most controversial DPS heroes in the entire game, and has been subject to many reworks to try and balance her. But despite plenty of attempts, her high damage, invisibility, and Hack, which stops you from using any abilities of your own, make her utterly infuriating in the hands of a skilled player.

The result is that many teams resort to counter swapping to try and nullify one or all of these picks, which can often mess up your team comp as you try to stop one hero from dominating. But once the hero bans come into play, fans will be able to remove them from the equation altogether.

Of course, the bans are a joint vote, so you’ll need your team to back in taking out a specific hero, so there’s no way to guarantee you’ll get that support when playing with randoms. But, if a team is made up of five friends who all agree on a single character to pick on, they’ll never have to face them.

So, if you happen to main either Zarya, Widowmaker, or Sombra, you might have no choice but to learn a new hero if you want to grind for those Galactic weapons.
